Structure

The GAPP Coalition is housed within the Central Shenandoah Valley Office on Youth, and the GAPP Coordinator is a staff person of the Office on Youth.  A leadership team including a President and Vice President direct the activities of the Coalition with significant input from Coalition members.  Specific job descriptions for key positions are listed below.

 

Coalition Staff

  • Facilitates decision-making and supports members’ priorities
  • Recruits/engages members & links with influential leaders, policy makers and media
  • Ensures that tasks are shared
  • Accountable to lead agency, funders, members & leaders
  • Oversees the grants and ensures compliance to grantor
  • Prepares, organizes, attends meetings and records Coalition activities

 

Leadership Team

  1. Coalition Chair
  • Develops and approves Coalition and steering committee agendas
  • Directs periodic reviews and updating of the Strategic Plan
  • Presides over steering committee meetings
  • Participates in the recruitment of new Coalition and steering committee members
  • Develops and maintains positive community relations with Coalition members, community prevention and treatment services providers, member communities, the Governor’s Office and other local, state and federal agencies
  • Represents the Coalition before the media
  • Coordinates Coalition support for local, state, or federal grants

 

  1. Coalition Vice Chair
  • Presides over meetings of the Coalition and committee when the Chair is absent
  • Participates in the recruitment of new Coalition and steering committee members
  • Develops and maintains positive community relations with Coalition members, community prevention and treatment services providers, member communities, the Governor’s Office and other local, state and federal agencies
  • May represent the Coalition before the media

 

  1. Leadership Team Member
  • Provides input and assists in developing and implementing the Coalition’s strategic plan
  • Reviewing outcomes and metrics for evaluating Coalition’s impact, and regularly measures the Coalition’s performance and effectiveness using those metrics; reviews agenda and supporting materials prior to Team meetings
  • Identifies and recruits Coalition members
  • Serves on committees or task forces
  • Represents the GAPP Coalition to stakeholders; acts as an ambassador for the organization
  • Ensures GAPP’s commitment to a diverse board and staff that reflects the our community

 

Coalition Members

Persons can be involved with the Coalition on different levels.  Examples of different members

  1. Attends GAPP meetings and activities, serves on work groups, recruits members and raises funds.
  2. Promotes the work of the Coalition and serves as a link to key groups and community populations.
  3. Provides key resources such as personnel, volunteers, services, supplies either in-kind or financial to the Coalition when needed.
  4. Stays informed on key issues, receives and forwards information to colleagues, friends, and others. Sends letters, notes, emails to legislative constituents on key bills and substance abuse issues

Below are examples of Coalition member duties.

  • Serves as liaison between coalition and their own organization and sphere of influence
  • Listens and openly shares interests/concerns
  • Participates in community needs and asset assessments
  • Understands community and the process of change
  • Recruits new members
  • Helps draft strategic plan and action plan
  • Helps develop/implement strategies
  • Represents coalition at key meetings/events
  • Serves as ambassador for coalition, promoting its mission
  • Provides useful data to coalition to aid in decision-making
  • Prepares for and attend meetings regularly
  • Helps develop resources to sustain coalition
