What You Can Do?

So, what can you do?  How can you be a part of GAPP?

1. Educate. 

  • Read articles about the dangers of drugs.
  • Ask us to speak to you and others.
  • Come to a presentation or town hall meeting where we and/or subject area experts will educate on the physical, social, and emotional consequences of drug use.
  • Join us on Facebook to keep up-to-date on the latest research and breaking news about drugs.
  • Join our list-serv to receive and read informative articles.

2. Promote.

  • Share our Facebook posts with your friends, family, and co-workers.
  • Ask your friends to join us on FB.
  • Share information about the dangers of drug use.  Set out our educational flyers in your office or church.
  • Share announcements about upcoming GAPP events.
  • Add a link to the GAPP website and Facebook on your business’ website.
  • Put up flyers about GAPP events at your job, church, business, community center, gym.

3. Advocate.

  • Write editorials to local newspapers.
  • Write your legislators and encourage them to vote for legislation that  keeps drugs out of the hands of youth and helps law enforcement keep drug dealers out of our community.
  • Contact members of your city council/ board of supervisors, County Manager and City Mayors about the importance 1) of having substance abuse education in the schools and 2) allow students to be surveyed about their opinions toward and use of drugs in order that the extent of the problem can be know and grants can be written to bring federal and state prevention dollars to our community.

4. Participate.  Show Up!

  • Attend a GAPP meeting.  Monthly Coalition meetings are the second Wednesday of the month, 3:30-4:30 pm, Augusta County Government Center, Smith West Room.
  • Attend a town hall meeting.
  • Attend a training.
  • Go to  a presentation on how to prevent substance abuse in our community.

5. Volunteer. 

  • Ask to be a part of the GAPP Leadership Team.
  • Volunteer to work on different projects as they arise.  Past projects have included coordinating youth video contests, promoting law enforcement tip lines, conducting Sticker Shocks at area businesses, and coordinating community needs assessments.
  • Volunteer at community events such as Drug Take Back Days, the Augusta County Fair, Sweet Dreams, Kids Matter Day, health fairs, and school community fairs.
  • Volunteer to put up posters and distribute information throughout the community.

6. Give.

  • Give financial resources to continue these efforts.
  • Give in-kind services such as printing services, office supplies, food and drinks, gas cards, meeting space, prizes/give aways, gift cards, helium balloons, hay wagons, candy, and much more.
